Bieber-fever? Really?!

How old is this kid really? How much could he know about love or relationships, and yet girls FREAK out over this pint-sized pop star. The little teeney bopper arrived on the scene in 2008, he was just 14 years old. His first single One Time, is what you would expect from a pop song: fluffy and lacking any real substance. For God's sake one of his first singles was Eenie Meenie, the way you would pick who would be it in tag as a child, or who was your best friend in kindergarten. Am I the only one mildly confused by this? As we discussed last week in class, one of the reasons there aren't many protest songs around is because they just don't really exist. Most music now is about love, and what people do for love. Justin Bieber, perfect example, what would you ever have to protest? That you went through puberty and your voice changed, or that people suddenly realized your hair cut was stupid? Maybe, you would protest the fact that people woke up one day and realized you sing about NOTHING. I am just saying, who are you and what is your point?

  1. I totally agree with you that Justin Bieber's music significantly lacks any substance. However, I do think the kid has some talent and potential. With his millions of extremely devoted fans (which I think is the reason I can't let myself like him-they are so annoying) if he started singing about a cause that he felt passion for think of how much good could come out of it. His plethora of die-hard fans would do anything for him, and if he cared about something I think they would too.

  2. I agree with Lizzie. I think a lot of people dislike him because of this massive fanbase that probably wouldn't be so crazy about him if they didn't think he was good-looking. If he started writing songs that actually meant something or caused people to actually THINK, he'd definitely get more respect as an artist. But as it is now, his songs are nothing special. They don't stand out from other pop songs and they just sound like whining most of the time. I think people's negative opinions of him would significantly change if he had even just a few songs about something other than some teenage girl and if he worked on his voice a little more. The only time I've seen him perform live was when he was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, and to be honest, he was AWFUL. He could really get somewhere with more singing talent and better written songs. He's world famous already, he should take advantage of that.
